“Exploring power, desire, injustice and survival….. MXMJoY sound like hope…”

The Guardian

“…..The return of British punk-funk trailblazers …[Maximum Joy] ..  their sound still resonates over three decades later ….now reformed as MXMJoy..a blissful amalgam of electronica and R&B, laced with grittier, brooding undercurrents that hark back to their early ’80s vision

…a sophisticated rebirth for one of the UK’s unsung trailblazers Vinyl Factory Interview

“…Rainforth’s beguiling vocals fire-stirring anthems’ 4 out of 5 stars - Guardian Music

“..Their trademark ‘funk-punk’ sound lives on in this album stabby bass guitar grooves as well as .. simmering synths….with sliding airy vocals lending a spooky quality to the tracks…”  Crack Magazine 7/10

Birthed from the seminal 1980s post-punk band Maximum Joy, MXMJoY is the dramatic reimagining by founding members Janine Rainforth and Charlie Llewellin.

A pivotal point in Bristol’s dub-informed lineage, Pitchfork compared Maximum Joys sound to "one of the Slits backed by the Gang of Four”, while PopMatters said, "Musically, the group’s use of complex percussion, horns, danceable bass lines, and overtly English female vocals built a bridge between the worlds of Afrobeat, reggae, avant-garde jazz, funk and pop".

Returning with a new line-up and all new material, MXMJoY released their first new album in 2019  - P.E.A.C.E.-  that remains faithful to their roots but showcases an expanded experimental direction into dark electronics and expertly used samples and effects.

The reformation was spearheaded by Rainforth with a show at Simple Things in 2015. From that MXMJoY evolved.

“Hugely important to the evolution of the Bristol post-punk scene, they can still produce compulsive dance beats in avant-garde electronic settings..” HiFi News

“Welcome regeneration of peppy Bristol post-punk outfit.. with Janine Rainforth’s vocal sounding as gloriously unaffected as ever” Uncut

P.E.A.C.E. maintains all of the things that made Maximum Joys music so good - great grooves, Slits-esque bravura and the ability to cross between genres at will - and update it with modern sonic techniques and production styles. The resulting sound takes in so much of Bristols rich musical history”  Bleep
